Dark Folk - Providence, RI
Vudu Sister is a dark folk ensemble from Providence, Rhode Island. The Sister is fronted by Keith J.G McCurdy, a French-American singer/songwriter with Sicilian and Romanichal roots. Their music takes influences from early 90s grunge, alternative rock, Romani and European Folk, as well as gothic rock and Romantic-era classical music. Literary influences range from the high fantasy works of J.R.R. Tolkien, the weird fiction of H.P Lovecraft, and the poetry and myths of classical antiquity. With this amalgamation, Vudu Sister brings a unique and lush arrangement of acoustic guitar/vocals, violin, and cello.
Vudu Sister pursues the themes of classical mythology and horror, mostly from the feminine perspective. They have opened for artists such as Marissa Nadler (Sacred Bones/Bella Union) and Rasputina (Filthy Bonnet/Columbia), as well as performing at the historic Newport Folk Festival in 2013. On Spotify, you can find Vudu Sister on the officially curated “Southern Gothic” playlist, which has generated some respectable streaming activity for the band (19.5k monthly listeners/2.5 million streams on “Psalms”/1.3 million streams on “Dead Man’s Pocket”).
